About
Family * Friends * Cycling * Woodworking
My father was the ultimate DIY’er before it was a thing. Looking back, it was more out of necessity than pride. Unfortunately for me, I did not have a choice and had to assist – carpentry, roofing, plumbing, etc. I learned a lot on weeknights, weekends, and summers. My biggest lesson was that this stuff is hard work, and not something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
I quickly realized that my dad could make anything. If we thought of it, he would make it. He was very functional in his approach and I knew no different. What I did know was that his creations worked but they were not like store bought furniture. They had a homemade look and feel. Later, I found out my uncle Jesse was an avid woodworker and he defined “fine woodworking” for me. He had all the tools and techniques they showed in magazines. I was floored. These two guys have been a big influence for me.
Many years later, I am married and a father of three and am a certified project manager in the banking industry. I work fulltime on projects that involve people and information technology, which is a great challenge. However, I realize that I missed some of my early adventures and have taken to woodworking to fill that void. Ironic, huh? My dad thinks so…
I appreciate the workflow of creating an idea or receiving a simple request and seeing to completion. They are still projects, but it’s just me completing the entire life cycle and am always looking for the next challenge.
